Man fatally shoots brother in Far Northeast

An argument between brothers inside a Woodhaven Road apartment led to a case of fratricide — brother killing brother — last Thursday night, Philadelphia police say.

Officers from the 8th district were called to the 3100 block of Woodhaven Road at about 10:50 p.m. in response to a “person with a gun” report. Inside one of the apartment units, they found the resident, 50-year-old James Stevens, on the floor and suffering from a gunshot wound of the chest. Paramedics took Stevens to Aria Health’s Torresdale campus, where he was pronounced dead at 1:34 a.m. on Friday.

Stevens’ brother, identified as William Shields, 33, was also inside the apartment. Police arrested him at the scene. Investigators believe the men were having a verbal argument when Shields retrieved a shotgun and used it on his brother. Police did not specify if the men had different fathers. Shields’ home address was not disclosed. ••
